romney head to key battleground states today after having their say at their first face-to-face debate. an exclusive cbs 5 surveyusa poll of adults in california shows that 48% believe romney won compared with 34% for president obama. 18% felt there was no clear winner. last night's forum in colorado focused mainly on the economy and other domestic issues. that debate took place at the university of denver, colorado being a big swing state in this election, as well. the focus of the debate was the economy. but big bird somehow got into the dialogue there. and, of course, as we mentioned, there were some polls that showed that romney came out ahead of the president on that first debate. bigad shaban joins us live from denver with some highlights from last night. romney are talking about their role in the debates. first lady says she mostly offers positive reinforcement but does get nervous. >> i get so nervous at these debates and, you know, i'm like one of those parents watching their kid on the balance beam. you're just standing there, just trying not to, you know, have any expression at all. >> ann romney says she comforts her husband during the debates and he looks for her in the audience. she talked up one of mitt's traditions, too. >> the first thing he does when he gets on stage -- there are a few first things he does. he takes off his watch and put it is on the podium. but then he writes dad on a piece of paper. >> says her husband respects had his father and wants to make him proud. tonight's debate begins at 7:00 pm eastern. >>> our affiliate knov says flight 1862 left for dallas yesterday but had to return because of landing gear problems. passengers say people were crying when the flight crew told passengers to prepare for an emergency landing. >> they said the landing gear -- okay, the wheel might like break or, you know,
can't imagine that romney will bring this up overtly but could he subtly use this in the debate? >> reporter: i don't know. i honestly don't think he's going to go there himself. this is the kind of thing that happens by outside groups or outside activists and the reality is, this is an intensely racially polarized country. barack obama will probably win somewhere around the votes of 80% of all minority voters, growing share of the electorate, but only 40% of white voter. it will be a real challenge after this election to try to bring the country together to govern. he was the first candidate ever to lose white business double digits and win. there is a racial element that is in the backdrop here. not necessarily racism, but very different views about the role of government and very different views about the parties. if it moves things at the margin, could it matter? sure. the last slice of voter also decide this they are forward looking at this point. and 2007 is a long way to reach back when you're dealing with 8% unemployment. >> ron brownstein, thank you so much. >>> the deb
was enduring the debate rather than fighting it. romney, on the other hand, came in with a campaign. he had a plan. he was going to dominate the time. he was going to be aggressive. he's going to push the moderator around, which he did effectively. he was going to relish the evening enjoying it. the latest thing we got from romney because he said so is you know what i want to do with people when they're poor? shove them into the emergency room. why didn't obama say that? you talk about social security and medicare people, they're part of your 47%. you want to drop them from the list of eligible americans. you don't have any care for these people. what are you talking about? we've got it on tape, governor. we've got it on tape what you think of these people. don't come out here and pretend you care about old people because you met somebody at some campaign event. you've written off 47% of the country before you even started. where was obama tonight? romney, i loved the split screen. staring at obama. addressing him. like the prey. he did it just right. i'm coming at an incumbent. i've got to
to prepare for this debate as governor romney. we don't know exactly how much less time he has had, because the campaign doesn't tell us how much time he spends practicing. they like us to think it is very little time, indeed. what we do know is that he is holed up at a westin hotel outside of las vegas with his top aides and with massachusetts senator john kerry, playing romney in mock debates. kerry knows romney well. they are long-time massachusetts politicians and, of course, kerry knows his way around a presidential debate because he went up against george w. bush in 2004. the reason the obama campaign is working so hard to play down expectations is because they like the trajectory of the race right now and don't want to do anything to change that. norah and charlie? >> no doubt. nancy cordes, thank you. both sides are trying to lower expectations for the debate. any misstep has the potential to derail a campaign. and both candidates have both good and bad moments from their debate history. >> john, you're absolutely right that presidents have to be prudent in what they say. but, you k
